As I settled in with my earbuds, pressed play on the audiobook of "When Things Don’t Go Your Way" by Haemin Sunim, it felt like opening a doorway into a world where serenity and acceptance could shine through the chaos of everyday life. Perhaps it was the soothing, melodic quality of Sunim's voice that captured my attention from the very first word; it held a kind of wisdom that resonated deeply within me. The Mystery of Longevity

I bought this little book in Los Angeles Chinatown in the 1970s. It represents a study conducted in China regarding the habits of individuals who had lived to be eighty to over a hundred years old. There are many interesting examples and a lot of diversity in behaviors leading to a long, happy and healthy life.

None of the behaviors involved anything close to what a modern western person with money might do to increase their longevity, as you might suspect. In every example these people would be considered poor and only have access to very basic lifestyle choices.

What was most interesting is what these hundreds of people had in common. Yes, tai chi and chi gong were in the mix, but there were more common behaviors. Number one was gardening. If gardening wasn't possible, having plants or fresh flowers in the house was next. Doing the same things at the same time everyday was another common factor, as was being with friends, often.

What I found so interesting at the time was the expectation that one was supposed to improve in every way as one aged.Getting older was considered an opportunity, not a sentence of infirmity and lack of ability.

I took the message of that little book to heart. Life offers us nearly everything we need to become interested, healthy and capable throughout our lives, and most of those things are easily accessible. Life isn't a trap that requires an expensive or exotic way through. 

Professor Cheng once said " The best reason to practice tai chi is so that by the time you figure out what life is about, you'll have some health to enjoy it." Of course there are many other components to health and well being, and tai chi can serve an immensely important role along with other daily behaviors that are easily accessible.

There are books you pick up casually, and there are books that grip you before you even turn the first page. Becoming Supernatural by Dr. Joe Dispenza was one of the latter for me. We wake up thinking about yesterday’s struggles or tomorrow’s worries, and in doing so, we give away our ability to create something new. The way he puts it is almost confrontational: If you’re always emotionally living in memories of the past, you’re just reliving the same story, not creating a new one. His solution? Meditation and mindfulness—not as trendy buzzwords, but as actual techniques to pull your awareness back to the present. I found this lesson particularly powerful because it forced me to ask: How much of my life have I actually been present for? And the answer wasn’t comforting.

3. Your Thoughts Create Your Reality: This isn’t just some “law of attraction” idea—Dispenza backs it with science. He explains how thoughts generate electrical signals in the brain, which in turn influence the body’s chemistry and, ultimately, the experiences we attract. What struck me most was his breakdown of how our thoughts aren’t just passive ideas but active forces shaping our biology. If we constantly think about stress, our body releases stress hormones. If we think about gratitude, our body releases healing chemicals. That made me realize how often we unknowingly program ourselves for the exact experiences we want to avoid.

4. Your Heart and Mind Need to Be in Sync: Dispenza introduces the idea of “heart coherence,” explaining how our heart and brain communicate in a way that can either create harmony or inner chaos. If our thoughts are anxious but our hearts long for peace, we create internal conflict. He describes how meditation and intentional breathing can bring these two into sync, creating a state where healing and transformation happen naturally. What blew me away was his claim that this coherence actually changes our electromagnetic field, influencing the people and environment around us.

5. The Future You Want Already Exists—You Just Have to Step Into It: One of the most intriguing ideas in the book is that time isn’t linear the way we think it is. Dispenza argues that every possible version of our life already exists in the quantum field, and by aligning our energy with the version we want, we can actually manifest it. This isn’t just about visualization—it’s about feeling as if you already have what you desire. The science behind it is complex, but the takeaway is simple: If you think and feel like the person who already has what you want, you increase the chances of becoming that person.

6. Your Body Believes Your Mind—Even When It’s Not “Real”: One of the most mind-blowing experiments Dispenza shares is how people who simply imagined doing bicep exercises actually increased muscle strength—without lifting a single weight. That alone was enough to change the way I viewed the power of the mind over the body. If the brain doesn’t distinguish between real and vividly imagined experiences, then what we focus on mentally has actual physical consequences. That made me wonder: What has my mind been training my body to believe?

7. Meditation is Not Just for Relaxation—It’s a Portal to Transformation: Before reading this book, I saw meditation as a stress-relief tool. Dispenza presents it as something much bigger: a gateway to rewiring the subconscious, healing the body, and accessing deeper levels of consciousness. He shares stories of people who overcame chronic illnesses through meditation alone. The skeptic in me wanted to question it, but the sheer number of cases—and the scientific studies he references—made it hard to dismiss.

8. You Are More Powerful Than You’ve Been Taught: The overarching theme of Becoming Supernatural is that we are capable of far more than we believe. Dispenza challenges the traditional notion that we are victims of circumstance, biology, or fate. He argues that we are, in fact, creators of our reality. The book left me with a sense of responsibility: If my life isn’t where I want it to be, how much of that is because I haven’t fully stepped into my power? And if I change the way I think, feel, and act—how much of my reality could I reshape?

Kearifan Lokal Masyarakat Suku Huwula di Lembah Balim 

Dan Realitas Ketercabikan Alam

Bagi kebanyakan masyarakat yang tinggal di Papua, Lembah Balim (Kabupaten Jayawijaya-Wamena) merupakan sebuah tempat yang sudah tak asing lagi; entah karena sudah pernah ke sana atau paling tidak pernah mendengar ceritera tentangnya. Lembah ini sangat unik; dia berada di pegunungan, dikelilingi oleh bukit dan gunung yang terbentang mempesona. Letaknya yang demikian, membuat tempat ini menjadi primadona untuk dikunjungi tidak saja oleh wisatawan lokal tetapi juga manca negara. Lembah yang digambarkan seperti kuali ini menyimpan begitu banyak kekayaan; (tentu) bukan emas (sebagaimana dimiliki gunung Grasberg dengan emas, tembaganya) tetapi kekayaan yang tersimpan di lembah Balim adalah budaya beserta nilai-nilainya (kearifan lokal). Salah satu kekayaan yang ingin kami deskripsikan dalam tulisan ini adalah konsep (prinsip) atau filosofi hidup ’WEN’, ‘WAM’ dan ’WENE’ (3W).

Konsep ‘Wen’, ‘Wam’ dan ‘Wene’ dalam Masyarakat Suku Huwula di Lembah Balim
Setiap budaya pasti memiliki konsep atau filosofi hidup yang khas atau unik. Filosofi atau konsep hidup yang dimiliki sering dijadikan sebagai panduan atau tuntunan yang mengarahkan masyarakat budaya ke arah yang diharapkan atau dicita-citakan. Masyarakat suku Huwula di Lembah Balim pun juga memiliki keunikan itu. Mereka memiliki konsep/filososfi hidup yang sudah diturun-alihkan dari generasi yang satu ke generasi yang lain. Generasi di zaman ini pun masih menghidupi konsep ini, walau dalam prakteknya tidak lagi seefektif dulu. Tulisan ini betitik fokus pada bagaimana filisofi 3W (wen, wam dan wene) bisa menjadi kapital (modal) dalam rangka menjaga, dan merawat alam yang akhir-akhir ini kurang mendapat penghargaan dan perhatian sebagaimana mestinya. Kita akan masuk ke pokok ini setelah kita mengerti dan memahami apa nilai yang terkandung dalam konsep ‘wen’, ‘wam’ dan ‘wene’ (3W).

Pertama, ’wen’ (kebun). ‘‘Wen’’ (kebun) merupakan pusat dari seluruh hidup masyarakat suku Huwula di Lembah Balim. Bagi masyarakat suku Huwula, ‘wen’ (kebun) adalah bagian yang tak terpisahkan dari hidup mereka setiap hari. Ikatan yang begitu tak terpisahkan ini lahir dari kesadaran dasariah bahwa hidup tidak pernah terlepas dari segala sesuatu yang ada di sekitar, pun ‘wen’ (kebun). Di dalam ’wen’ (kebun) tersimpan begitu banyak kekayaan; ada hidup, ada ’wam’ (babi), ada uang dan ada perempuan). Prinsip/cara pandang yang demikian mendorong segenap masyarakat suku Huwula untuk menghargai dan bahkan menjunjungi tinggi nilai dari ’wen’ (kebun). ‘wen’ tidak saja ada sebagai konsekuensi dari hidup bertani tetapi lebih dari itu sebagai simbol yang memberi dan meneruskan hidup. Hal ini terungkap dalam petikan wawancara dengan Bpk. Korneles Siep berikut ini;

“Kami orang suku Huwula tidak bisa hidup tanpa ‘wen’ (kebun). Sejak dari nenek moyang dulu, ‘wen’ (kebun) sudah menjadi bagian penting dari hidup kami. Hal ini bisa lihat dalam bagaimana orang tua dulu memperhatikan dan menata kebun dengan sangat bagus. Dari pagi sampai malam orang tua dulu selalu ada di kebun. Bahkan karena keasikan kerja, orang tua dulu hanya makan satu kali saja, yaitu pagi hari, siang mereka tidak makan lagi. Maka dulu orang tua biasa bilang ‘hat heki agatma, usawusak hayuk halok, hat hipere awu motok dosak’ (kalau kau tidak bekerja kebun, kau tidak akan punya apa-apa atau miskin atau lapar)”.

Sangat jelas di sini bahwa ‘wen’ sangat memainkan peran yang sentral bagi masyarakat suku Huwula. Dia (‘wen’) tidak saja dianggap sebagai arena pengaktualisasian diri sebagai makhluk pekerja (sebagaimana dikatakan Paus Yoh Paulus II dalam ensiklik Laborem Exercens (Dengan Bekerja) tetapi lebih dari itu sebagai sumber atau pusat hidup. Hidup justru ada dan lahir dari sana (wen). Dia (wen) memberikan kelimpahan ‘berkat’ bagi hidup yang berkelanjutan.

Namun, sebagaimana lazimnya masyarakat yang bermata pencaharian bertani, ‘wen’ (kebun) tidak dengan sendirinya bisa menjadi berkat dan bahkan sumber atau pusat hidup bagi manusia. ‘wen’ (kebun) hanya bisa menjadi berkat bahkan pusat dari kehidupan apabila disertai dengan perjuangan. Maka, bagi masyarakat suku Huwula, perjuangan mesti menjadi kunci atau prasyarat dalam menjadikan ‘wen’ (kebun) sebagai pusat hidup. Hal ini sangat jelas dalam ungkapan ‘kalau kau tidak bekerja kebun, kau akan lapar’.

Kedua, ‘wam’ (babi). Hidup harus dirayakan, itulah prinsip hidup masyarakat Melanesia pada umumnya dan secara khusus masyarakat suku Huwula di lembah Balim. Dalam rangka merayakan hidup ini, ‘wam’ (babi) menjadi binatang sakral yang harus dikorbankan pada kesempatan ini. Maka setiap kali ada pesta (apa pun jenis pestanya) babi menjadi korban yang tidak bisa tidak harus ada. Bahkan banyaknya jumlah babi yang dikorbankan menunjukkan bahwa pesta itu sangat meriah. Tak heran kalau kemudian masyarakat suku Huwula di lembah Balim berani membunuh beratus-ratus ekor babi untuk merayakan pesta, sebab itu sangat berpengaruh pada kemeriahan sebuah pesta. Tak heran pula kalau kemudian, mereka berjuang keras memelihara banyak babi, sebab dengan memiliki babi, orang akan dipandang sebagai orang kaya dan adanya babi membuat apa saja yang dimau bisa terwujud. Salah satu perayaan yang mengungkapkan nilai perayaan hidup ini adalah “bakar batu”. Perayaan ini sudah menjadi ciri khas suku-suku yang terletak di pegunungan provinsi Papua, tak terkecuali suku Huwula di Pegunungan Tengah. Peranyaan ini tidak bisa dilepas-pisahkan dari keberadaan ‘wen’ (kebun). Perayaan bakar batu justru mengungkapkan dimensi kelimpahan yang berasal dan bersumber pada ‘wen’ (kebun). Maka bagi masyarakat suku Huwula, perayaan bakar batu mengungkapkan beberapa nilai di dalamnya. (1) Nilai syukur. Kelimpahan dalam hidup disadari bukan sebagai sesuatu yang begitu saja jatuh dari langit tetapi berkat keterlibatan banyak pihak. Pihak utama yang terlibat dalam kelimpahan ini adalah leluhur yang diyakini senantiasa membantu dan memberikan kelimpahan hasil dari ‘wen’ (kebun). Leluhur bagi masyarakat suku Huwula adalah pribadi yang tidak kelihatan tetapi sungguh terlibat dalam suka dan duka hidup mereka. Keterlibatan – walau tak kelihatan – inilah yang mendorong masyarakat suku Huwula untuk melakukan pesta bakar batu. Di saat inilah mereka bersama roh leluhur merayakan secara bersama syukuran atas kelimpahan itu. Selain karena keterlibatan yang tak kelihatan dari leluhur, mereka juga melakukan syukur atas keberhasilan mereka dalam bekerja. Tak jarang, syukuran ini menelan korban babi (wam) yang sangat banyak. Banyaknya korban babi (wam) ini juga mengindikasikan ada kelimpahan hasil yang dapat memenuhi kebutuhan hidup mereka. (2) Tidak hanya dalam perayaan syukur, pesta bakar batu juga terjadi pada saat ada peristiwa duka. Melalui pesta bakar batu, mereka ingin menunjukkan kecintaan terhadap pribadi yang meninggal dunia. Kecintaan itu harus juga dirayakan dalam pesta bakar batu. Inlah moment di mana mereka mengungkapkan perpisahan dan sekaligus ungkapan terimakasih atas pengalaman kebersamaan dan tentu juga jasa-jasa baik yang telah dilakukan oleh pribadi yang meninggal dunia. Lebih dalam dari ungkapan terimakasih dan salam perpisahan, pesta bakar batu pada saat ini juga diyakini sebagai kesempatan untuk membangun relasi yang baik dengan roh para leluhur. Relasi yang baik ini sangat menentukan nasib akhir dari orang yang meninggal. Petikan hasil wawancara (informal) dengan Bpk. Korneles Siep di bawah ini menggambarkan hal ini;

“Pesta bakar batu untuk kami masyarakat suku Huwula adalah wajib; terutama pada saat-saat khusus seperti, pesta pernikahan, acara gereja (untuk saat setelah agama sudah masuk), dan saat-saat ada keberhasilan (kebun, sekolah). Selain itu pada saat ada yang meninggal dunia, juga kami buat pesta bakar batu. Dengan pesta bakar batu ini, kami mau ungkapkan perpisahan dan terimakasih kepada oranyg yang meninggal karena sudah berjasa dalam hidup. Juga dalam acara bakar batu ini, kami ingin membangun hubungan baik dengan leluhur kami, biar bisa menerima yang baru meninggal hidup bersama mereka”.

Ketiga, ’wene’ (beragam persoalan hidup). Hidup tidak pernah bebas dari persoalan atau masalah. Keyakinan ini juga dimiliki masyarakat suku Huwula di Lembah Balim. Bagi masyarakat suku ini, persoalan-persoalan yang mereka alami setiap hari merupakan bagian yang tak terpisahkan dari hidup mereka. Persoalan-persoalan itu bisa dalam bentuk pernikahan, persoalan adat, kesehatan, ekonomi, relasi dengan sesama dan dengan alam, pun persoalan pendidikan. Persoalan-persoalan ini tak terhindarkan.

Dalam rangka mengatasi persoalan-persoalan ini, tidak ada jalan keluar yang bisa didapat selain kembali ke ‘wen’ (kebun). Semua persoalan itu hanya bisa diatasi apabila masyarakat suku Huwula memiliki perhatian terhadap ‘wen’ (kebun). Di sini dan dari sinilah semua masalah yang dihadapi dapat diatasi. Dengan memperhatikan ‘wen’ (kebun), masyarakat bisa mendapatkan sesuatu untuk bisa mengatasi masalah (biaya) pendidikan, kesehatan, masalah perkawinan, masalah ekonomi, dan seterusnya. Kutipan hasil wawancara di bawah ini menggambarkan realitas ini;

“Untuk kami masyarakat Huwula, tidak ada masalah yang tidak bisa diatasi apabila orang rajin mengolah dan merawat kebun. Dulu tidak ada yang namanya tidak ada makan, tidak ada yang bikin kacau, karena setiap hari selalu ada di kebun dan di kebun pasti selalu ada makan”.

 

‘Wen’, ‘Wam’ dan ‘Wene’ dalam Konteks Perjuangan untuk Keutuhan Ciptaan
Perjuangan untuk menjaga keharmonisan alam dalam kontek zaman ini sudah semakin dibutuhkan. Berhadapan dengan maraknya kejadian alam yang menakutkan dan mengancam keselamatan manusia, orang semakin menyadari bahwa betapa pentingnya untuk menjaga hubungan yang harmonis dengan alam yang ada di sekitar. Orang semakin membuka mata untuk melihat realitas keberadaan alam (dan lingkungan) sebagai bagian yang tak terpisahkan dari hidup manusia. Maka tak heran, di zaman ini, kita menyaksikan begitu banyak gerakan yang memperjuangkan keutuhan kembali lingkungan dan alam yang sudah terlanjur hancur.

Konsep masyarakat lembah Baliem (wen, wam dan wene) merupakan kearifan lokal yang justru menjunjung tinggi nilai relasi keharmonisan dengan alam ini. Melalui konsep ini, mereka ingin mengatakan bahwa betapa hidup kita (manusia) sangat bergantung pada realitas lain yang ada di sekitarnya. Sebagaimana mereka memandang dan menghayati ‘wen’ (kebun) sebagai sumber hidup, alam pun dalam arti yang sama juga semestinya dipadang sebagai sumber yang memberi hidup bagi manusia. Dia tidak saja dipandang sebagai saudara/saudari (pandangan ala Fransiskus Asisi), tetapi lebih dari itu, dia adalah sumber hidup. Dalam konteks ini, tepatlah Paus Fransiskus menyebut alam sebagai ibu bumi. Dia ibu, karena memberikan kehidupan kepada setiap manusia. Dia juga adalah ibu karena dia (alam) – sama seperti semua ibu memiliki rahim – tempat setiap manusia berasal. Konsep ini semestinya menjadi pemahaman bersama semua orang agar keharmonisan alam (menuju ke keharmonisan hidup) bisa dirasakan dan dialami oleh semua manusia beserta dengan alam yang ada di sekitarnya.

 

Membangun Kepedulian: Belajar dari Kearifan Lokal Masyarakat Suku Huwula
Tanpa mengabaikan nilai-nilai kearifan lokal dalam budaya lain, kami ingin mengajak pembaca untuk belajar dari konsep kearifan lokal masyarakat lembah Baliem di Wamena. Ada beberapa hal yang bisa kita pelajari dalam rangka menghentakkan nurani kita untuk peduli dengan lingkungan alam yang ada di sekitar kita.
Pertama, konsep ‘wen’ (kebun) sebagai sumber hidup merupakan konsep yang sangat ekologis. Melalui konsep ini, kita diingatkan bahwa hidup kita bagaikan sebuah lingkaran rantai yang hanya bisa berjalan apabila semua sisi berjalan dengan baik. Hubungan kesaling-tergantungan ini adalah sebuah keniscayaan. Alam pun demikian; selain bisa menjadi rahim yang menenangkan dan menentramkan, dia juga bisa menjadi “gudang” penyimpan makanan untuk kehidupan manusia, tidak saja generasi sekarang tetapi juga generasi yang akan datang. Kerusakan gudang akibat ketidakpedulian menyebabkan kesediaan makanan untuk kehidupan menjadi berkurang.
Kedua, konsep ‘wen’ (kebun) sebagai bagian yang tak terpisahkan dari hidup masyarakat suku Huwula menegaskan bahwa penghargaan terhadap alam tidak saja karena dia (alam) telah menjadi ancaman yang menakutkan (sebagaimana kita saksikan begitu banyak bencana alam yang ujungnya merenggut nyawa manusia) tetapi karena memang dia (alam) pantas untuk dihargai. Dia (alam) – tidak saja manusia – justru menjadi elemen penting dan tak tergantikan dalam merangkai dan merajut keharmonisan hidup. Kehilangannya justru menjadi malapetaka bagi kehidupan manusia. Ketiga, ‘wene’ (persoalan). Persoalan hidup (pendidikan, kesehatan, perkawinan, dan seterusnya) adalah bagian yang tak terpisahkan dari hidup manusia. Itu pulalah yang diyakini masyarakat suku Huwula di ‘wam’ena. Bagi mereka – bahkan sudah menjadi pengetahuan umum yang turun temurun -, persoalan-persolan menyangkut hidup adalah bagian yang tak pernah jauh dari realitas kehidupan mereka. Akan tetapi, bagi mereka, persoalan ini bisa diatasi ketika hubungan dengan ’wen’ dijaga dan diperhatikan dengan baik. Misalnya, ketika mereka sedang berhadapan dengan masalah perkawinan, atau pendidikan atau kesehatan, peran ‘wen’ di sini sangat penting dan sentral. Dengan memiliki ’wen’ dan menjaga relasi yang baik dengannya, permasalahan-permasahan itu dengan mudah diatasi, karena dari ’wen’ inlah, baik uang maupun makanan atau denda berupa babi bisa didapat.
Kearifan lokal ini memberikan pelajaran berharga bagi kita bahwa persoalan dalam hidup adalah bagian yang tak terpisahkan dari hidup itu sendiri. Alam telah memberikan begitu banyak tawaran penyelesaian konfllik. Ketika kita mengalami masalah dalam pendidikan, ekonomi atau juga kesehatan, alam telah menyediakan sumber dayanya yang bisa menghasilkan uang untuk digunakan dalam rangka penyelesaiaan soal itu. Ketika manusia menderita begitu banyak masalah yang membuatnya tidak tenang, alam menawarkan keteduhan dan kesejukannya, dst.
Sayangnya, dimensi ini kurang disadari – atau kalau pun disadari, kurang dipedulikan – manusia zaman ini. Kelobaan dan ketamakan menutup segala ruang yang memungkinkan dia untuk berpikir jernih. Alhasilnya, alam dimanfaatkan sesuka hati, tanpa memiliki kepedulian dampaknya di kemudian hari. Relasi yang harmonis, berubah menjadi tak harmonis; alam yang dulu dianggap dan dipadang sebagai ‘ibu’ yang memberi hidup berubah menjadi sumber ketakutan, bencana dan malapetaka. Jelas bahwa kerusakan alam di saat ini merupakan tanda bahwa ada persoalan yang sedang mengidap manusia. Persoalan itu tidak hanya menyangkut kemiskinan atau ketidakadilan, tetapi lebih dari itu juga menyangkut sikap, kebiasaan dan hasrat untuk menguasai sesama, alam dan (bahkan) Tuhan. Hasrat ini tidak secara langsung menempatkan manusia di atas segalanya. Dampaknya, keberadaan alam dipandang tidak lebih dari demi memenuhi hasrat (kuasa, jabatan dan kekayaan).

 

Penutup
Realitas ketercabikan alam saat ini merupakan tanda nyata bahwa ada yang tidak beres dengan manusia. Bisa jadi manusia zaman sekarang lagi mengidap penyakit kronis yang bersumber pada gaya hidup yang serba instan. Gaya hidup instan inilah yang menyebabkan manusia juga berpikir instan. Ini sangat kelihatan dalam prilaku-prilaku kaum kapitalis yang pikiran dan pekerjaannya menumpuk kekayaan untuk diri sendiri tanpa mengindahkan dampak sosial, lingkungan, ekonomi dan budaya yang terjadi di tengah masyarakat.
Kearifan lokal masyarakat suku Huwula (3W) memberikan penegasan bagi kita di zaman ini bahwa betapa hidup kita sangat dekat dan bahkan tidak bisa dipisahkan dengan alam yang ada di sekitar kita. Alam telah menyediakan begitu banyak hal bagi pemenuhan kebutuhan kita; dan tugas kita adalah menjaga dan merawatnya secara baik agar relasi saling memberi dan mendukung ini berlangsung secara berkelanjutan, tidak hanya untuk generasi kita saat ini tetapi juga generasi yang akan datang. Merusak relasi harmonis ini sama artinya mendatangkan malapetaka bagi diri dan generasi selanjutnya.
